POISED and AWAITING Artist Interview 2

Published: 16/10/2024

Ongoing for a month now, the “Poised and Awaiting” exhibition has garnered enthusiasm and praise from the public. Many people have been intrigued by the works’ unique themes and creative techniques. In this visionary environment, the artists reinterpret elements of everyday life through personal perspectives. We are honoured to have yet another artist Law Suet Shan to share her creative philosophy and express the essence of “Poised and Awaiting” through her work.

💬The themes used in this exhibition are quite unique. Are there any reasons or inspirations behind your choice of materials?

🗣️Since graduating in 2022, I have been experimenting with how different materials respond to clay. During this process, I discovered fascinating interactions between traditional Chinese medicine, plant seeds, and clay. I chose to use seeds for this exhibition because they carry multiple symbolic meanings. Through the artworks presented, I hope to convey the beauty, possibilities, and diversity of ceramics.

💬 Can you summarise your creative process from the initial concept to the finished work? What role does your cultural or personal background play in shaping your work?

🗣️The creative process begins with curiosity about something, then experimentation, finding an interesting angle, then reviewing or responding to the work, and finally repeating the process until one is internally satisfied.

Regarding the role, it is probably the role of a questioner or a listener. I ask questions and mud responds to them — and it’s this interactive dialogue that results in work with a quieter ambience, which seems to reflect a certain part of my personality.

💬 Is there anything interesting you can share about the process of this exhibition?

🗣️It was interesting to place my work alongside that of another artist, Marco. The interconnection between our two sets of works extended the viewing experience and intensified the rhythm.      Showcasing the pieces in a stairwell space that ascends was also intriguing; the name of the work also emerged from this setting.
