The ongoing exhibition ‘Poised and Awaiting has received widespread acclaim. The public is very curious about the themes used by the six young artists, including foils, stickers, street ads, seeds, and even dust. Through diverse creative processes, their work convey a sense of refreshing feeling combined with a resilient strength. Today, we are honoured to invite artist Wu Lok Wang to share his artistic journey.
While most artists aim to convey a specific message through their exhibitions, Wu states that he does not have a specific message to convey but rather wants to showcase the transformation process from his old works to the new ones, just as the exhibition space‘s staircase illustrates the existence of a transition from one place to another.
How would you describe your artistic style and the materials you use?
I use different methods to make the images “unintelligible” or only retain partial fragments of the images. I like using charcoal because it can turn the surface very dark, making it difficult for the audience to immediately grasp the full picture of the subject. This is a clever way to make people linger and explore the details in the painting or ponder about the things outside the frame. But I also enjoy this visual effect.
The themes used in this exhibition are quite unique. Are there any reasons or inspirations behind your choice of materials?
In previous works, I used adhesive tape to cover the paper to create a blank space effect. At that time, I wondered if I could use this technique for new experiments, which led to this series of works.
During the process of this exhibition, is there anything interesting you can share?
Before the official opening, we discussed the arrangement of the works with the curator. We found that we all mainly use material research as an entry point, such as the traces left by seeds after high-temperature firing, and the oxidation process between silver needle paintings and the air. We also gained a lot of knowledge outside our own media through exchanging artworks.
