Colors Come with Thoughts — Exhibition at The Gallery of Hong Kong Art School

Exhibition Statement

Inspired by the quote “The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts” by pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus, our BAFA graduating students Ken CHAN and Polly LO illustrated their views on colors through their experience in and thoughts on art- making in their joint exhibition “Color Come with Thoughts”. While Heraclitus viewed color as belonging to thoughts, and that people were shaped by what they had in mind, this exhibition contemplated the relationship between color, thought and human mind.

In the Middle Ages, artists painted to mirror reality. Colors were used to represent certain meanings and symbolisms under different cultures and social contexts. In the world of contemporary art, however, artists followed their cognition and consciousness in their use of colors, which in concept closely resembled the ideas of Heraclitus. When we followed our thoughts to put the respective colors on the canvas, not only was the work we produced reflective of our feelings, emotions, and perceptions of the world but its aesthetics and meaning were also heavily influenced.
