COURSE FEATURES
Nietzsche’s interest in Greek tragedy makes him in The Birth of Tragedy write, “The world can only be justified as an aesthetic phenomenon.” How can surrealism help to understand this statement in a modernist context? And, how can surrealism help to understand the existence of modernity in ruins? By situating surrealism as a kind of cultural theory, we are going to approach this question through art, literature and film with reference to Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, André Breton, Walter Benjamin, Georges Bataille, André Masson, Eugène Atget, Dziga Vertov, Michel Foucault, Xi Xi and more.
