Introduction to Cultural Landscape Photography: Ruins and Old Districts

Cultural landscape photography differs from general landscape photography in that it explores the relationship between people and their environment. This course aims to understand certain social phenomena through photography, proposing different questions and answers through images. The tutor will guide students to various locations for practical sessions, focusing on ruins and old districts that are typically difficult to access. Following the shoots, there will be discussions and analyses of the photographic works. The final class will see students compiling all captured images into a more cohesive body of work.

The first session will cover important aspects to consider when shooting outdoors and methods for framing shots, followed by an outdoor shoot. Students will present their images in the next class, engaging in a group discussion where the tutor will provide feedback and insights. The goal is to facilitate sharing and discussion of each other’s work. The tutor will also share their own photographic works from the outdoor sessions, allowing students to learn various perspectives and shooting techniques.

This course is suitable for students who have basic understanding of photography and wish to further enhance their skills as well as those who are interested in cultural landscape.

Students are required to bring their own film or digital cameras, with the option to bring large format cameras and tripods.

Outdoor sections will be arranged at every Sunday afternoon, students will be informed of the details before lesson. Dates and times of outdoor sections are for reference only and may change depending on the weather conditions.
