Fashioning Utensils for Lifestyle ︱Exploring Ceramics: Shape and Form – Intermediate (SATURDAY)

COURSE FEATURES
Ceramic utensils are a mainstay in our lives, providing both functional and aesthetic value to our day-to-day. While its ubiquitousness attests to its popularity, it may also make us forget the skillset and artistry behind every piece of stoneware.  

 This course combines theory and practice for a complete immersion in understanding the concept of “form follows function” and applying it to the creation of ceramics. With this knowledge, participants will design ceramic utensils to optimise functionality. The in-depth exploration will comprise discussions and practice, and cover production aspects of pinching to drawing to surface treatment. 

 Students will:
– Explore the functions of different utensils and analyse each according to its usage and one’s lifestyle
– Examine the relationship between the ceramic’s purpose and its shape
– Test the practical conditions of various shapes by observing and recording through practice and hands-on experience
– Make multiple ceramics in various shapes

Tutor
Nutz LUK graduated in 2009 from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia (in collaboration with the Hong Kong Art School), majoring in Ceramic Arts. Her works interpret some of the overlooked aspects of life while exploring the possibilities of ceramics. Her artworks have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Macau, China, Japan, and Australia. In 2019, she founded “nutzeramic”, actively engaging in art planning and education. Through ceramics, she connects different community groups, showcasing the diverse development of ceramic arts.
