Capturing the Glorious Human Form  

The human figure has long been the most inspirational subject in art. Masters like Edgar Degas & Egon Schiele created a legacy with their impactful depictions of the human form that opened our eyes, minds and souls. This 10-lesson course will explore various ways of representing and interpreting the human figure by observing life models (clothed or nude), referencing photographs, and studying great works from the classical, modern and contemporary periods. For participants aged 18 and above. 

Using pencil, pastels & oil, students will: 

  • Explore & capture different possibilities of the human figure 
  • Acquire skills in illustrating the human form proportionally & expressively 
  • Apply colour in objective & subjective ways 
  • Use brushstroke to express rhythm & movement 
  • Employ elements such as lines, shapes, colour & texture to convey emotions & feelings 
  • Enhance understanding of perspective and techniques relative to body parts and the composition of the human figure 

 

Lesson 1 – Classical Proportion & Structure (Earth tone pastel) 

Lesson 2 – Classical Figure in Oil (Underpainting. Earth tone) Nude Model 

Lesson 3 – Classical Figure in Oil (Overpainting. Earth tone + relevant colour) 

Lesson 4 – Gestural Drawing/ Sketching (Monochrome/Colour pastel) Model in Ballet Wear 

Lesson 5 – Rhythmic Dancer in Oil (Underpainting. Earth/Grey tone) Model in Ballet Wear 

Lesson 6 – Rhythmic Dancer in Oil (Overpainting. Full palette) 

Lesson 7 – Distorted Figure in Lines & Colour (Full palette. Pastel) Nude Model 

Lesson 8 – Reconstructed Figure in Geometric Form (Monochrome+ limited palette. Pastel) Dressed Model 

Lesson 9 – Self-initiated Semi-Abstract Creation in Oil (Composition. Monochrome) 

Lesson10Self-initiated Semi-Abstract Creation in Oil (Refinement. Self-chosen palette)

Steven Leung  

Acquired his B.A. & M.F.A from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He taught at various institutions including the Department of Fine Art at CUHK & CUSCS, SCOPE (City University of Hong Kong) & IVE(KT) on a part-time basis. He has also been teaching a range of programmes such as CVA, DFA, HDFA & BA at Hong Kong Art School since 2000. Steven’s art focuses on portraiture and still life to convey human relationships & memories. Solo exhibitions include Portrait Painting by Leung Man Ho, Heads & Parts- Portrait Sculptures & Drawings by Leung Man Ho Steven, Domestica- Painting, Drawing & Paper-cut by Steven Leung & When Will I See You Again – Figure Paintings & Drawings by Steven Leung.
