The Art of Appreciating Art
Though art – like beauty – is subjective, there are foundational concepts that can enhance our understanding of art. And by grasping these fundamentals, we can better appreciate art beyond the aesthetics.
Students will:
- Understand what art is based on theories such as representation, expression, formalism
- Learn about elements such as composition, proportion, light and shadow, colour, balance, and perspective
- Analyse art on topics, meaning, symbolism, and cultural connotations
- Discuss different evaluation criteria of art appreciation and evaluation
- Explore the value of art and its importance to humanity

Tutor
Dr Leung Kwong Yiu
Dr Leung is currently a lecturer at the Community College of the University of Hong Kong and Chinese University, majoring in aesthetics. His research interests include methods of thinking, art, religion, ethics, and Chinese philosophy, and he has authored books such as “Illustrated Thinking Methods”, “The End of Art”, “Illustrated Practical Ethics”, “Illustrated Political Philosophy”, “Illustrated Ancient Chinese Philosophy”, and “Japan Sketch Collection”. With a Master of Fine Arts degree from RMIT University in Australia, Dr Leung regularly travels to France, Italy and the United Kingdom to further his studies in painting techniques and theory.
In 2013, he founded the non-profit art organisation Pure Heart Arts to promote community art and contribute to arts activities in Hong Kong.
