Another Othering Cultural Theory with Art On Madness

COURSE FEATURES
Michel Foucault writes on madness in History of Madness (1961). Derrida doubts if one can write on madness when one is not mad. What is the distinction between insanity and sanity?
How possible can art approach madness? Can it be artistically represented? Which art form is the maddest? Should an artist be mad to become an artist?

Then, dare to be mad, but not “dare to know” (the motto of the enlightenment)? Or, is madness living in us? Is madness a part of our lives? Then, how can madness be othered?

These questions help to read the debate between Foucault and Derrida and beyond. Freud on the unconscious, Roland Barthes on love, Maurice Blanchot on madness, Jacques Lacan on desire and more are also included in the discussion.
