Another Othering Cultural Theory with Art On Madness

COURSE FEATURES
This course continues the discussion of art and cultural theory. This is made through Greek tragedy. In it, human existence is revealed. It discusses the importance of Greek tragedy to art and cultural theory. How can it help to read cultural theory implied in art, and to read art in the perspective of cultural theory? Some tragic figures will be covered, including Laocoön, Achilles, Ulysses, Penelope, Oedipus, Antigone, Saturn, Apollo, Dionysus, Narcissus, Socrates, Orpheus, Muses and more. Topics include father and son relationship, time, fate, home, love, wisdom, man and nature, contest, art forms (theatre, music, sculpture, painting in particular) and more. They are discussed with reference to the following theorists: Aristotle, Nietzsche, Blanchot, Benjamin, Adorno, Freud, Lacan and more.

Dr. FONG Ho Yin
Dr. FONG Ho Yin teaches literary and cultural studies in various tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. He is writing a book tentatively entitled as Walking Everyday Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Taipei in Literary and Cultural Studies. He received a PhD degree in Comparative Literature at the University of Hong Kong in 2007.
