Brushstrokes and Imprints: Exploring Chinese Calligraphy and Seal Carving
This course is an eye-opening exploration into the artistic beauty of traditional Chinese calligraphy and seal carving. Through five sessions focused on the renowned work “Ode on the Red Cliffs” by Yuan dynasty calligrapher Zhao Mengfu, participants will learn how to illustrate emotions and concepts using brush and rice paper. To enhance learning, the course includes specialised studies on seal script calligraphy and three practical sessions for creating personal name seals — a comprehensive 5+3 combo format that lets participants apply what they have learnt to their own creations.
The course will start with basic calligraphy strokes and gradually move on to mastering the characteristics of running script. Each class will not only cover technical training but also encourage participants to appreciate classic calligraphy works and experience the distinctive expressiveness of calligraphy and seal carving.
Students will:
- Be enriched with the history and development of Chinese calligraphy and seal carving
- Understand the characteristics of running script, starting with Zhao Mengfu’s “Ode on the Red Cliffs”
- Explore the role of calligraphy and painting in Chinese culture
